What Is Landscaping?

The term 'landscaping' is bandied about quite a lot in our culture. Home improvement shows on television many times will head outside to fix the landscaping or to improve the curb appeal of a home. What exactly is landscaping?
Landscaping is defined as any activity that modifies the visible features of a piece of land. So, really, it can be anything. Anything that changes what a piece of land looks like is considered to be a form of landscaping. It may be planting a tree, placing bushes, adding rocks or wooden pieces or it may be as easy as changing the slope of the ground from flat to hilly or from hilly to flat.
In landscaping you can play around with living elements like flowers or trees or you can use natural elements like rocks for your desired effect. Anyone can do landscaping, all it needs are a clear view of what you want it to look like once it is finished, a bit of artistry and of course a bit of a green thumb.
The first step in any project is to know your area. The art of creating something beautiful will change depending on where you live. Things that grow wonderfully in California may never get to bud if you plant them in Michigan, for example. So, take into account the weather patterns and the different features like soil quality, the depth of the frost line, winds, and native flora that will do well in your area. Most importantly, pack your patience!
Once you have your plan you can set to work. Sometimes the land you want to landscape will need to be reshaped, and this is called grading. Sometimes you will have to fill in areas with additional top soil or take out rocks and weeds before you begin, but most of all, it's a chance to be creative and have fun in a natural setting.
Landscaping takes time and you need to have at least a little sense of what you are doing. But don't worry if you can't get it right, that's what we have professional landscapers for. They will come in and assess your space and give you plenty of choices on what to do there to make it as beautiful as it can be. They have seen it all before and will be there for maintenance should you need it throughout the changing seasons too.
